Full Day Plan
Mark the roll and record any absences on the Supply Teaching Day Feedback Form. Identify any students with special educational needs and ensure you are aware of any assistance they may require throughout the day.
Rules and Routines
Establish rules and expectations for the day with the students. Familiarise yourself with the regular routines of the class, as well as any additional activities happening during the day e.g. assembly.
Literacy – Reading Comprehension
Distribute a copy of the Comprehension – Giant Squid to the students. Read the text as a class. Monitor and support the students as they independently complete the comprehension questions. Once the students have finished, discuss the answers as a class.
Literacy – Writing Task
As a class, discuss some of facts usually included in an informative text about a particular animal e.g. appearance. Distribute a copy of the Informative Texts Writing Task – Lions to the students. Monitor and support the students as they sort the facts into categories and use these to independently write an informative text about lions. When the students have finished, encourage volunteers to share their texts with the class.
Numeracy – Number and Place Value
Provide each student with a Describe That Decimal Worksheet. Assign each student with a decimal, or allow the students to choose their own decimal. Ask the students to write their decimal in the box at the top of the worksheet. Monitor and support the students as they complete a range of activities to describe their decimal. When the students have finished, correct the worksheet as a class.
Numeracy – Measurement
Place the students into small groups. Provide each group with a set of problems from the Area and Perimeter Task Cards. Allow the students to work together in their groups to solve each of the problems, recording their working in their books. Rotate the problem cards through the groups as required. Encourage the students to share their solutions and thought-processes with the class.
Literacy – Independent or Shared Reading
Allow the students to independently read an appropriate book of their choice. Alternatively, choose a book to read and share with the students.
Science – Sustainability
Display the Sustainability Footprints Posters on the board. As a class, discuss the impact of humans on the environment and encourage the students to suggest ways in which we can be more sustainable. Provide each student with a blank piece of paper. Ask the students to draw around their own foot and create their own design for a sustainability footprint. Once they have finished, encourage volunteers to share their sustainability footprint with the class.
