Making Vocabulary Fun for Key Stage 1

Here at Teach Starter, we go batty for a good voca-BOO-lary! 👻

Vocabulary instruction doesn’t have to be boring – especially during the last week of October – when you use this fun Halloween resource.

You will find illustrated word cards for the following Halloween terms:

  • Bat, broom, cat, treats, costume ghost
  • Frankenstein, haunted house, jack-o-lantern, moon, mummy
  • Pumpkin, spider, scarecrow, trick or treat, witch

In addition to the list of words for Halloween, a series of four worksheets are included that have your pupils matching images to terms and use different groups of words to write a story.

Even More Halloween Activities!

💀 Chilling Charades

Print a black and white set of the words for Halloween, fold them up and put them into a container. To play, divide your class or small group into two teams. Teams will take turns sending up one pupil to choose a word from the bowl and get 30 seconds to act out the word soundlessly for their team. If no one guesses the word, it returns to the bowl, and no point is given. Once every pupil has had their turn to act out a word, the game is over, and the group with the highest points wins.

Easily Prepare This Halloween Vocabulary Word Resource

Because this resource includes an answer sheet, we recommend you print one copy of the entire file. Then, make photocopies of the blank worksheet for pupils to complete.
