Make rhyme time sublime!

With our rhyming words game, students will practice listening to words and finding the matching card for the sounds they hear.

Recognize & Produce Rhyming Words

This download includes two versions of this game, depending on your students’ reading proficiency:

  • Word cards
  • Picture cards

Players will identify the word and connect the matching domino with a rhyming word.

An answer key is included with this download so that students can self-check their work.

Scaffolding + Extension Tips

If you have struggling students, invite them to use a visual reminder to help with the concept, such as an anchor chart or word wall.

Challenge fast finishers who understand the concept to record the rhyming words on a whiteboard or piece of paper and add additional rhyming words to their lists.

More Activities For Recognizing Rhyming Words

We created this resource for your reading center as an independent practice activity. You can also use it for small group and full-class instruction through scoot activities, lesson reviews, formative assessments, and more!

We suggest these:

👯 Odd Man Out

Place 3 cards at each station, making sure 2 of the cards create a rhyme set and the 3rd card is different. Student pairs will rotate through each station and match the rhyming words. Remind students to reshuffle the cards before moving on to the next station.

🔗 Rhyming Words Human Chain

Provide each student in your class with a domino. Challenge the students to find both of their other halves, creating one long chain of dominoes. For an extra challenge ask the students to complete the task in silence!

✂️ Upcycle Into Playing Cards

When students tire of the dominoes element, turn this game into a deck of cards! Break out your scissors and cut up the cards in half. Students can play games like Match It, Go Fish, or Snap (to name a few).

Easily Prepare This Resource for Your Students

Print on cardstock for added durability and longevity. Place all pieces in a folder or large envelope for easy access.
