Free Needs and Wants Worksheets for Kindergarten?

Are you teaching your students about the difference between needs and wants? With these fun activities, students will be able to practice identifying the difference in a hands-on way. Students will sort pictures of items into categories – Needs vs. Wants – and place them into the correct categories. This resource is a great tool to help young kids learn essential economic concepts in primary grades.

Kids can practice identifying needs and wants by sorting pictures and words in this free social studies lesson.

What are needs and wants? A need is something you need to be able to live. The pictures of needs in this worksheet and interactive activity are food, housing, clothing, shoes, and water. A want is something that you would like to have, but do not absolutely need. The pictures of wants in this worksheet include a kite, phone, car, cat, cake, and camera.

We wanted to make it easy for teachers and parents to access our resources. This is why we made this needs and wants activity in three different formats. You can download the Color or Black and White PDF file, or assign the interactive version in Google Classroom or another LMS.

Scaffolding and Extension Tips

  • Challenge fast finishers to write lists or mini-books containing examples of needs and wants.
  • To support struggling students, have them work with partners or in small groups to decide on the correct answers.

Easily Prepare This Resource for Your Students

  • For the worksheet format, simply print one copy of the worksheet for each student, and you are ready to go! An answer key has been included for your convenience.
  • For the Google Slides Interactive format, download the resource file and assign it to Google Classroom. Students will open the document in edit mode, not presentation mode, to complete the activity. If you love this one, make sure you check out our other amazing Needs and Wants resources!
