Changes in Australian Curriculum V9 Maths
The maths curriculum has seen some pretty significant changes that affect primary teachers with a number of standards raised as they need to be taught earlier. Here's a look at some of the biggest changes.
- The maths curriculum now has 6 strands — Number, Algebra, Measurement, Space, Statistics and Probability.
- Addition and subtraction standards for year 1 maths classes have been lifted.
- Beginning in year 2, there are additional expectations regarding recall and proficiency with multiplication facts.
- There's an adjustment to the sequencing of content, including when teachers will need to teach telling time, introduce fractions and work on students' recall of multiplication facts ('times tables’) and solving equations.
