THE Must-Have Alphabet Activity

This versatile teaching resource has been designed to specifically promote uppercase letter recognition and phonemic awareness. It’s an alphabet activity that also presents wonderful opportunities for students to refine fine motor skills by cutting, pasting and drawing.

Develop fine motor skills with your students with cutting and gluing activities.

Why Upper Case?

You’re probably wondering why these letters have been created as uppercase characters?

Teaching your students both lowercase and uppercase letters simultaneously prevents confusion. This activity can be used in conjunction with a multitude of different sound and letter activities. For more ideas, check out our blog, 20 Fun and Engaging Alphabet Activities for Kids.

It’s also important to use the terminology of ‘lowercase’ and ‘uppercase’ rather than little and big letters. This can get confusing for your students.

Introduce lowercase and uppercase letters together.

Alphabet Activity Ideas You’ll Be Dreaming About

(1) Laminate It

You may like to laminate each letter set to use again and again. The idea behind this concept is that your students will need to put the letter character together. You can further this experience by asking your students to use the remaining time to practice their lowercase and uppercase letters.

Environmentally savvy idea: print the letters on thick card. It will still maintain it’s useability.

(2) Create Their Own

Let your students get creative! The black and white download options lend themselves to a variety of craft ideas…

  • Print the full black and white letter character and get your students to colour them in and stick them in their workbooks.
  • Provide your students with a variety of additional art and craft supplies (feathers, pipe cleaners, googly eyes, crepe paper) to add their own touch to their letter characters.
  • Print the letter character and additional pieces and have students cut them out and stick the letter characters together in their book.

  1. Brainstorm words that start with the letter you are focusing on.
  2. Write those words inside the letter.
  3. Use the lowercase letter unless it’s for a name to model the correct letter to write.
