Lesson Plan
Assessment – Australia Becomes a Nation
An assessment task in which students will demonstrate an understanding of Australia’s colonisation and Federation.
This lesson plan includes the following resources:
Assessment Plan
Tuning In
- Revise the content of the unit. Refer to resources and retrieval charts made throughout the unit that demonstrate the student’s prior learning.
- Provide the students with opportunities to describe and explain key facts they have discovered about Australian Federation.
Teacher Instruction
- Project the Australia Becomes a Nation assessment on the board and read through each activity. Answer any questions the students may have. Provide each student with their own copy of the assessment.
Guided/Independent Learning
- Allow the students to independently work on the assessment, selecting a task and learning style that suits them. As the students are completing the task, provide support by referring them to the work completed throughout the unit.
Wrapping Up
- Allow the students to share their learning with a partner. Once they have done this, collect the work samples in order to assess each student’s understanding of the unit objectives.
Differentiation
Extending Students
- Encourage more capable students to complete more than one activity on the assessment grid.
Supporting Students
- Direct less confident students towards simpler activities on the assessment grid and provide support if necessary.

It would be helpful if this assessment came with a marking rubric to help with the marking process. I have created one myself if you anyone would like to access to it. Otherwise it was a great task that the kids loved and enjoyed choosing their own way to present the information learnt.

Hi Belinda, thank you for your comment. Rubrics are a very handy resource addition, which we would love to create for all of our resources, projects and units. However, as schools are so different in what their goals and strategies are we would find it difficult to create something that catered so diversely. If there is anything else that I could assist you with, please do not hesitate to contact us.
