Inspire 3D shape building with a creative project that encourages students to design, construct and reflect on a fantasy creature and habitat made entirely from cubes.

3D Shape Building Through a Creative Creature Challenge

Bring geometry to life with this engaging 3D shape building project for Year 4 students. In the Creature Creator Challenge, students invent a fantasy creature and build both the creature and its habitat using cubes. Along the way, they plan, sketch, construct, label and reflect on their designs.

This resource combines spatial reasoning, problem-solving and creativity as students explore how cubes can be stacked and combined to create different shapes, features and structures. The project includes planning pages, building tasks, a final design sheet and a reflection activity, providing a complete learning experience from start to finish.

Students will develop their understanding of geometric construction while strengthening communication, design thinking and mathematical vocabulary.

Fun and Flexible Ways to Explore 3D Shapes

This 3D shapes resource can be used in a variety of engaging ways across your classroom:

  • Creature Convention – Have students display their completed creations and present their creature’s powers, habitat and design choices to the class.
  • STEM Challenge Extension – Add design constraints such as a limited number of cubes or specific habitat requirements to encourage deeper problem-solving.
  • Narrative Writing Prompt – Use completed models as inspiration for creative writing, with students creating stories about their creature and its adventures.

Building With Cubes Made Simple
