An Adverbial Phrases Activity for Hands-On Learning

If your students are learning to identify and categorise adverb groups/phrases, they’ll love this hands-on sorting activity!  The resource contains 28 sentence cards that students must read and sort according to the type of adverbial phrase used. There are five phrase types featured in the resource: when, where, how, how long or how often.

This adverbial phrases sorting activity downloads as a full-colour PDF or editable Google Slides file. It contains:

  • 5 x sort headings

Through this activity, students will show their ability to understand how adverb groups/phrases work in different ways to provide circumstantial details about an activity.

How to Use This Adverbial Phrases Activity

This adverbial phrases activity is easy to prepare and use in your classroom. Here are some simple instructions for your students:

  1. Place the sort headings on the floor or another flat surface. Place the sentence cards in a pile.
  2. Choose a sentence card from the pile and read the sentence aloud.
  3. Find the adverbial phrase, then work out if it is providing more information about when, where, how, how long or how often.
  4. When you have made your choice, place the card under the corresponding sort heading.
  5. When you have finished sorting all of the cards, check your answers using the answer sheet.
