Roll a Christmas Story with a Fun Dice Game!

The holidays are approaching, so it’s time to start prepping your seasonal reading and writing lessons. Get your students excited about writing this festive season with this Roll a Christmas story dice game from the Teach Starter team.

This engaging Roll a Christmas Story resource turns writing practice into a game by letting students roll a die to generate different story elements. Each roll helps them build their own Christmas tale, choosing characters, settings and events as they go. They’ll be so engaged creating their Christmas stories, they won’t even realise they’re learning about sentence formation, sequencing and storytelling, all while having fun!

How to Use This Roll and Write a Story Resource

Using this roll and write a story resource in your classroom couldn’t be easier! Just follow the steps below to get started:

  1. Hand out the materials – Give each student a Roll a Christmas Story worksheet and a die. Alternatively, students can share in pairs or small groups.
  2. Roll the dice – Students roll to select a character, setting, event and mode of transportation from the chart.
  3. Create the story – Using their results, students use their imagination to write a unique Christmas story.
  4. Extend the activity – Once the students have finished, why not have them illustrate their stories, then read them aloud to the class.
