Teach estimating time with a real-world class party planning project.

Estimating Time Through Real-World Party Planning

Helping students develop confidence with estimating and comparing durations is an important part of building measurement skills. This estimating time project gives students an engaging, real-world scenario where they take on the role of event planners to create a schedule for a two-hour class party.

Designed for Year 3 students and aligned with learning about formal units of time, this project-based resource guides learners through brainstorming party activities, estimating how long each activity will take, organising activities into a logical sequence and ensuring their schedule fits within a 120-minute timeframe.

By completing this project, students strengthen their understanding of time measurement while also developing planning, reasoning and problem-solving skills. The authentic context encourages meaningful mathematical thinking and helps students see how estimating time is used in everyday situations.

Creative Ways to Use This Estimate Time Project in the Classroom

This flexible estimate time resource can be incorporated into your maths program in a variety of engaging ways. Because students are planning a realistic event, the project naturally promotes discussion, decision-making and mathematical reasoning.

  • Launch a time estimation unit – Use the project as a culminating assessment or inquiry task after teaching units of time and duration.
  • Connect maths to real-life planning – Encourage students to think like event organisers by considering activity order, transitions and realistic time allocations.
  • Cross-curricular writing extension – Have students write a persuasive piece convincing the class that their party schedule is the best choice.
