Comparing Units of Time Using Everyday Events

Learning about hours, days, weeks, months and years helps students develop an understanding of duration and how time is measured in everyday life.

This comparing units of time resource encourages students to sort familiar activities based on how long they take. Using task cards featuring relatable events such as watching a movie, learning spelling words and waiting for a birthday, students compare durations and discuss their reasoning.

Students will practise:

  • Comparing units of time.
  • Sorting events into hours, days, weeks, months and years.
  • Describing the duration of familiar activities.
  • Using time-related vocabulary.
  • Explaining their thinking with peers.

Engaging Ways to Use This Duration of Time Year 1 Activity

This duration of time Year 1 resource can be used in a variety of ways throughout your maths lessons:

  • Time Sorting Centre – Students sort activity cards onto the correct time mats.
  • Class Discussions – Encourage students to explain why an activity belongs in a particular category.
  • Movement Activity – Place the time mats around the room and have students move to the category they believe is correct.
