Engage students with a narrative structure activity that combines reading comprehension, music and creativity through the Book Week 2026 theme, Symphony of Stories.
Create a Story Soundtrack — A Creative Narrative Structure Activity
Inspired by the CBCA Book Week 2026 theme, Symphony of Stories, this engaging narrative structure activity encourages students to explore how music can enhance storytelling. By connecting key story events to instruments, moods and musical elements, students deepen their understanding of plot development and story structure.
Students read The Final Symphony, a captivating story about a young reader who helps save a magical orchestra where stories and music work together to keep imagination alive. They then identify the orientation, rising action, climax, falling action and resolution before creating a soundtrack to match each stage of the narrative.
To save teachers valuable preparation time, an original reading passage, completed example and reflection activity are included. The planning templates can also be used with any class novel, picture book or independent reading text, making this a versatile reading response activity for Book Week and year-round literacy instruction.
Students also design a soundtrack cover and reflect on how music can influence mood, tension and emotion throughout a story.
