Learning How to Draw a Simple Map

Learning how to position and locate objects on a map is a key spatial awareness skill that students need to master. Some students find drawing from different perspectives easy, whereas others find this task particularly challenging! Lots of practice is therefore needed to refine this key aspect of mapping.

This map skills resource provides students with the opportunity to create a map of their classroom, playground, bedroom or neighbourhood block that contains at least six unique objects. Students will create a legend for their map and answer comprehension questions that utilise the legend and compass rose. A sample map is also provided to help students get a feel for the expectations of the task, and so they can see how 2D shapes can be used to create maps from a bird’s-eye view.

Tips for Extension and Support

If your class contains a mix of above- and below-level learners (and let’s be honest… what class doesn’t!), we have provided some differentiation tips and tricks below.

Supporting Less-Confident Students

Visual aids can be of great assistance to students who may get their cardinal directions confused. Provide them with a copy of our Compass Directions Poster to refer to as they complete the mapping activity.

Challenging More-Confident Students

Why not challenge more-confident students to add additional map features to their maps? Ask them to include a scale, or perhaps to add an overlaying grid with coordinates. Students could even write their own set of questions about their map for a partner to answer.

Before You Download

This resource downloads as an easy-print PDF or an editable Google Slides file.

As the file contains multiple templates and an example map, we recommend printing one copy of the file before selecting the required pages for photocopying.

Completing a map collaboratively as a class? Why not project one of the templates onto your interactive whiteboard for a paperless lesson!
