Explore what resilience looks like and sounds like with your students with this set of three worksheets perfect for your social-emotional learning lessons.
What Does Resilience Look Like and Sound Like?
Developing resilience is an important part of our students’ social and emotional development. The ability to bounce back and learn from setbacks is a life skill that will serve students in good stead as they move from childhood into adulthood. But can our students identify resilient behaviours in themselves and others? Do they know what resilience looks like and sounds like?
This set of three resilience worksheets has been designed by our expert teacher team to help your students identify the key behaviours of resilient people. The worksheet pack contains three options for you to choose from, based on your lesson focus:
- Exploring Resilience – Students write and draw what resilient behaviour looks like and sounds like. They are encouraged to reflect on their own experiences of being resilient and think about the experiences of resilient people they know.
- What Does Resilience Look Like? – Students write and draw what resilient behaviour looks like. They are encouraged to reflect on their own experiences of being resilient and think about the experiences of resilient people they know.
- What Does Resilience Sound Like? – Students write and draw what resilient behaviour sounds like. They are encouraged to reflect on their own experiences of being resilient and think about the experiences of resilient people they know.
This resilience worksheet downloads as a black-and-white PDF or an editable Google Slide. The Google Slide makes a great choice should you wish your students to complete this activity electronically.
By completing these worksheets about what resilience looks like and sounds like, students will foster a deeper understanding of this key concept and how it can be applied to their own lives.
Ways to Use This Resilience Worksheet in Your Classroom
If you’re unsure of the best way to approach the topic of resilience with your students, you may like to try this suggested method of implementing this resilience worksheet in your classroom:
- Review Key Definitions – Remind your students of what the word ‘resilience’ means. Essentially, resilience is the ability to bounce back from challenges, setbacks or adversity.
- Share Experiences – Ask students to share their understanding of resilience based on their own experiences. Write key points on the whiteboard to create a shared definition of resilience.
- A Familiar Example – Share a real-life story or a video that depicts a well-known person who has overcome adversity. Discuss the specific resilient behaviours demonstrated in the story.
- Introduce the Resilience Worksheet – Provide students with a copy of your preferred version of the worksheet. Have them spend some time independently reflecting on what resilience looks like and sounds like and writing these ideas down on the worksheet.
- Closing Discussion – Invite students to share their reflections about what resilience looks like and sounds like with the class, fostering an open and supportive atmosphere. You might like to close the lesson with an inspirational quote about resilience.
