Magnet Activities for Kids

When it comes to magnetism, one of the best ways to learn whether or not an object is magnetic is through hands-on exploration! If you are looking for magnet activities to help your students understand which objects are magnetic and which are non-magnetic, then this simple worksheet is for you!

The dedicated team of expert teachers at Teach Starter has designed this set of worksheets to guide your students through an exploration of magnetic and non-magnetic objects. Students are required to use a magnet to explore a selection of common classroom objects, and then decide whether or not the object is magnetic. The items included on this magnetic or non-magnetic worksheet are:

  • Pencils
  • Paper
  • Ruler
  • Scissors
  • Paper clips
  • Pencil case
  • Glue stick
  • Eraser

A further page requires students to explore how two bar magnets react with each other. Questions include:

  1. Place the two north poles together. What happens?
  2. Place the two south poles together. What happens?
  3. Place the north and the south poles together. What happens?

Students are then asked to draw a picture of an object being attracted to a bar magnet.

This magnet activity provides the perfect opportunity for students to explore magnetism by experimenting with magnets and common classroom objects.

Multiple Options for This Magnet Activity

This magnetic and non-magnetic worksheet comes in two versions: a paper-based PDF version and a Google Slides digital version. The two variations are explained below:

  • Printable Version – This version includes three black and white worksheets and can downloaded, copied and distributed to the students.
  • Digital Version – This version includes the same three worksheets with slight variations so that they may be completed digitally. Students will type their responses into preformatted boxes and will drag and drop images to show whether or not the tested objects are magnetic.

Whether you choose the traditional paper option or the technology-based option, your students will have the opportunity to demonstrate their understanding of magnetism by completing this magnetic and non-magnetic worksheet.
