It’s Heating Up! Let’s Sort Heat Sources

Unlock an exciting world of hands-on science exploration with our heat source sorting activity. This printable educational resource has been designed by a teacher to captivate students’ attention and facilitate their understanding of different heat sources. This teaching resource is best used when learning about the different types of heat energy and how they are produced.

In this sorting activity, students need to sort different everyday items or experiences into three different heat sources:

  • Kinetic Energy – The friction created when two surfaces rub against each other produces heat energy. Some examples include rubbing your hands together, sliding down a slippery dip or dragging your feet across carpet
  • Electrical Energy – Electrical appliances can convert electrical energy into heat energy. Some examples include hair dryers, light bulbs, and stovetop elements.
  • Chemical Energy – Heat energy can be produced as a result of a chemical reaction. Some examples include burning wood, digesting food, and mixing chemical substances.
