Identify Homophones in Sentences

How many times have you had to correct a misspelled homophone in students’ writing? If the answer is frequently (as we suspect it might be!), then we have the resource for you!

Peg cards provide a hands-on and interactive way for students to engage with a concept such as homophones. Students are required to physically manipulate the cards by placing a peg on their answers, which actively involves them in a learning process. Our experienced teacher team has created this set of 24 peg cards to help your students identify the correctly spelled homophone in the context of real sentences. 

Each peg card contains three sentences. Students are required to place a peg on the sentence that uses the underlined word correctly. For example:

Did you buy the ice cream from over they’re?

There the best of friends.

I got to hold their new baby.

In the above example, the student would place their peg over the third sentence, as this is the only sentence that uses the correct homophone.

The homophones included in this resource are: there/they’re/their, cent/scent, buy/by/bye, rode/rowed/road, two/too/to, meat/meet, wear/where, blue/blew, brake/break, plain/plane, pour/poor, hear/here, dear/deer, piece/peace, read/red, won/one, board/bored, stares/stairs, sun/son, know/no, sew/so, male/mail, groan/grown.

This resource downloads as a full-colour PDF or an editable Google Slides file. An answer sheet is also included in both downloads to allow students to self-correct their choices.

This homophones resource offers a practical, hands-on way to reinforce concepts while keeping students engaged and motivated in their learning.

Multiple Uses for These Homophones Peg Cards

Incorporating peg cards into the classroom provides an interactive and enjoyable way for students to learn and revise content.

1. Collaborative Group Activity – Peg cards are a great way to promote collaboration among your students. Students can work together and take turns to read the sentences, work out the correct response, and place a peg over the correct answer. 
2. Focused Independent Learning – Peg cards can be assigned to specific students for independent practice during class time. They provide a quiet and focused learning opportunity, allowing students to work on the cards independently without disrupting the overall classroom environment. 
3. Assessment With a Twist – Peg cards can also be used as a formative assessment to gauge your students’ understanding of common homophones. By informally checking student responses, teachers can identify common misconceptions or words that need further instruction.
