Exploring How Sound Is Made Sorting Activity

Help students discover the science behind how sound is produced with this engaging How Sound Is Made Sorting Activity. As students examine different musical instruments, they will consider the actions that produce vibrations, helping them understand how sound energy is created.

This interactive How Sound Is Made Sorting Activity encourages students to observe, analyse, and classify instruments based on the action needed to produce sound.

Strike, Blow, Pluck, or Shake – Which Actions Produce Sound?

Students will use a set of 24 photo sorting cards featuring a variety of musical instruments. For each card, they will decide how the instrument produces sound and sort it into the correct category:

  • Strike – Instruments that produce sound when they are hit or tapped
  • Blow – Instruments that make sound when air is blown through them
  • Pluck – Instruments that create sound when strings are plucked
  • Shake – Instruments that produce sound when shaken

By sorting the cards, students practise identifying the action that causes vibrations, helping them better understand how sound is created.
