Add an ‘I Wish My Teacher Knew’ activity to your first-day plans to learn more about your new students.

I Wish My Teacher Knew… An Amazing Opportunity

When you begin a new school year with your standard All About Me activity, you get the basic information about each student. But let’s face it, do you really learn much about them by asking them their favourite colour? Probably not, but there is a way to change that. This year, switch up your basic About Me Activity with a printable “I Wish My Teacher Knew” activity for the first day of school.

By completing this “I Wish My Teacher Knew” activity sheet, your students can share information with you (and only you) that they feel you need to know before they start the school year. Some prompts your students will respond to are

  • Some of my strengths
  • Some things I need to improve on
  • Some things I worry about
  • Some things that make me happy
  • And more.

Learn Your Students’ Stories with I Wish My Teacher Knew

Instead of the superficial things, this activity dives deeper into student’s lives and encourages them to share more about themselves, the good and the bad. Many times, our students’ lives are more complex than we realise, and having that information at the beginning of the year can be extremely helpful in forming a relationship with that student.
