50 CVCE Words at Your Fingertips!

This list of 50 CVCE words has been compiled to assist you in implementing your phonics program in your classroom. Long vowel sounds created by the so-called ‘magic e’ (also known as split digraphs) are used frequently in the English language. It is important our students understand that when the magic e appears at the end of the word, it is silent. It uses its magic to change the short vowel sound in the middle of the word to a long vowel sound. The split vowel digraphs in the list include the following:

  • a_e (as in lake)
  • e_e (as in eve)
  • i_e (as in bike)
  • o_e (as in note)
  • u_e (as in rude).

Multiple Applications for This CVCE Word List

This list of CVCE words can be used in numerous ways to support the diverse needs of your learners during your literacy sessions. Here are some of our suggestions:

Whole-class instruction

Project the word list on your interactive whiteboard. As a class, practise segmenting and blending the phonemes in each CVCE word on the list. You might also like to manipulate the phonemes in each word to create word chains, e.g. “What word do we make if we swap the ‘l’ in ‘lake’ with an ‘r’? How can we swap out the ‘k’ to make a new word?”

Individual practice

Send the lists home so your students can revise decoding (reading) and encoding (spelling) the CVCE words on the list. Be sure to include only words containing letter-sound correspondences you have already addressed in class.

Formative assessment

Use the word list as a progress monitoring tool in order to keep track of your students’ phonemic awareness and to identify the letter-sound correspondences that require further review.
