Location and Position Teaching Slides for Year 2 Maths

Understanding location and position is an important part of developing spatial reasoning skills. Students use these concepts every day when describing where objects are, reading maps, navigating spaces and explaining routes to others. These skills provide a foundation for later work with mapping, coordinates and geometric reasoning.

This comprehensive slide deck introduces students to maps, location and positional language through engaging discussions, guided practice and interactive activities. Students learn how maps represent places from a bird’s-eye view, explore common map features and practise describing the location of objects in relation to other objects.

The slides also include map-reading tasks, direction-following activities, grid navigation challenges, discussion prompts and opportunities for students to create and explain their own routes.

With a mix of explicit instruction and hands-on learning, this resource makes teaching location and position concepts both engaging and accessible for young learners.

Giving Directions Through Fun and Meaningful Activities

This giving directions resource can be used in a variety of engaging ways across your maths lessons.

  • Classroom navigation challenge – Have students create directions to move around the classroom using furniture and landmarks as reference points.
  • School map exploration – Extend learning by creating simple maps of the classroom, playground or school grounds.
  • Role-play activities – Students take turns being the navigator and the follower, practising how to give and follow clear directions.

These flexible activities help students build confidence in communicating location and movement while making maths learning active and memorable.
