Strengthen time estimation skills with a hands-on Time Detective Challenge.
Time Estimation Activity That Makes Duration Meaningful
Understanding how long everyday tasks take is an essential measurement skill. This Time Detective Challenge gives students the opportunity to explore time estimation through a series of engaging, real-world tasks that require them to make predictions, gather data and reflect on their results.
Students act as time detectives, estimating the duration of familiar activities before using a sand timer or digital timer to record the actual time taken. They then compare the two results and determine whether their prediction was accurate. Activities include counting to 100, drawing a butterfly, writing the alphabet, hopping in place and more.
The resource also includes a reflection sheet that encourages students to think critically about their estimates, identify challenges and consider how they can improve their ability to judge duration in the future.
