Say Hello in Auslan!
If your students have mastered the art of fingerspelling and are looking to take their Auslan interactions to the next level, then this is the video for you!
In this quick one-minute video, students will learn how to have a simple conversation with a partner entirely in Australian Sign Language! Tegan from Deaf Connect will walk the students through the following conversation:
Hello.
How are you?
I’m good.
My name is (fingerspell name).
What is your name?*
Have a good morning.
See you later.
Note: The signing structure used in the video for “What is your name?” is more English-influenced and not fully aligned with natural Auslan grammar. This approach is sometimes used in educational settings as a transitional step, particularly when introducing sign vocabulary in line with spoken/written English structures.
In Auslan, question words like ‘what’, ‘where’ and ‘why’ are typically placed at the end of the sentence. This means that the question “What is your name?” is signed as “Your name what?” in Auslan. Viewers should note that this phrasing better reflects how Deaf Auslan users naturally communicate.
