Lesson Plan
Tuning In
- Students watch and listen to the 1950 Family Date, Dinner in a 1950’s Home video on YouTube. After watching, ask the students:
- What were some of the every day activities the family did when they got home from school?
- Were there any activities from the video that are a part of your family life?
- Ask the students to share aspects of their daily family lives with the class and record their responses on the board.
Teacher Instruction
- Encourage the students to reflect back on the video. Ask the students:
- How is family life in the 1950s the same as family life today?
- How is family life in the 1950s different from family life today?
- As a class, use the Compare and Contrast – Venn Diagram Template to compare daily family life from the 1950s with the present.
Guided/Independent Learning
- Provide each student with a copy of the template used in the whole class activity. Ask the students to chose one element of family life e.g. leisure time. Allow the students to use the Venn diagram to compare how this element of family life was experienced in the 1950s with how it is experienced in the present day.
Wrapping Up
- When the students have finished their Venn diagrams, encourage volunteers to share their ideas with the class.
