Lesson Plan
Tuning In
- Students watch and listen to the Here to There: An Animated History of Transportation video on YouTube. After watching, ask the students:
- What were some of the modes of transport in the video that we don’t have today?
- How is transport from the past the same or different from the present?
- Why do you think transport has changed over time?
Teacher Instruction
- Display slide 9 from the Transport – Past, Present and Future PowerPoint. As a class, discuss the comparisons between past transport and present transport. Encourage the students to suggest other comparisons to add to the list.
- Display the Transport Time Machine – Past and Present Transport Sorting Activity. As a class, sort the types of transport into past and present. Encourage the students to justify their decisions as they sort the types of transport and discuss how each type of transport has changed over time.
- Display slide 10. As a class, discuss which modes of transport are from the past and encourage the students to explain their reasoning.
- Display slide 11. Use the pictures to sequence the progression of the automobile. Discuss the changes that have been made over time and encourage the students to suggest why these changes may have occurred.
Guided/Independent Learning
- Provide each student with a copy of the Transport Then and Now – Worksheet. Ask the students to illustrate how the car, train and bike has changed over time.
- Once the students have finished, ask volunteers to share their illustrations with the class and explain how each type of transport has changed.
Wrapping Up
- Place students into small groups. Provide each group with the Transport Then and Now – Memory Game. Explain to the students that they must match an old and new picture of the same transport type. Monitor and support the students as required.
Differentiation
Extending Students
- Encourage more capable students to assist others and share their ideas during group work and class discussions.
- Provide the students with a copy of the Transport Changing Over Time - Timeline Worksheet. Ask the students to choose their own mode of transport and illustrate, using three pictures, how it has changed over time.
Supporting Students
- Encourage less confident students to participate in group work and class discussions at a level at which they feel comfortable.
