Lesson 7: Let’s Communicate!
A 60 minute lesson in which students will explain how we communicate with others.

Lesson Plan
Tuning In
- Ask the students to use nonverbal communication to line up in order of birth month, from January to December. Reinforce that they cannot speak to each other. After the activity, ask the students:
- What were the challenges of lining up without speaking?
- How did you communicate with each other?
- Is nonverbal communication harder than verbal communication? Why?
Teacher Instruction
- Display slide 6 from the Communication – Past, Present and Future PowerPoint. As a class, discuss the importance of communication.
- Discuss the names and purposes of the different communication devices on slide 7. Identify which communication devices are no longer used today.
- Display slide 8. As a class, brainstorm all the different ways in which we communicate with others today. Record the ideas as a mind map on the board.
Guided/Independent Learning
- Provide each student with a copy of the Communicating with Others – Worksheet. Ask the students to illustrate the communication devices used daily in their family home.
- Once the students have finished, place the students into pairs and ask the students to share and compare their family communication devices.
Wrapping Up
- Display slide 9. As a class, brainstorm how people might communicate with each other in the future.

- Encourage more capable students to assist others and share their ideas during group work and class discussions.
Supporting Students
- Encourage less confident students to participate in group work and class discussions at a level at which they feel comfortable.
