Daily Life - Then and Now Unit Plan

This History unit covers a range of concepts relating to how daily life of the present is different from the past and how it could change in the future.

It consists of 8 lessons of appropriately 60 minutes duration.

The sequence of lessons and suggested time frames should be regarded as a guide only; teachers should pace lessons in accordance with the individual learning needs of their class.

An assessment task for monitoring student understanding of the unit objective is included, and will require an additional lesson.


  • To compare daily family life from the past with the present.
  • To identify an everyday object as a toy and describe how it is used in daily life.
  • To describe the features of a present day toy.
  • To compare toys from the past with the present.
  • To identify different types of modern transport and how they are used.
  • To compare past and present transport and describe how it has changed over time.
  • To explain how we communicate with others.
  • To explain how communication devices have changed over time.

Preparing for Learning

This History unit provides excellent opportunities for cross-curricular integration. Look for ways to meaningfully integrate the content of the unit with other learning areas e.g. Literacy, Numeracy, The Arts.
Prior to commencing the unit, create a past and present display in your classroom. Display teaching resources in the classroom that will stimulate the students' interest and assist in their learning For examples of teaching resources to display in your classroom, browse the Past and Present collection on the Teach Starter website.

Some of the resources which accompany this unit plan will need to be prepared prior to teaching. For this reason, it is advised that teachers browse through all lessons before commencing the unit.
