Lesson 2: Identifying and Classifying Toys
A 60 minute lesson in which students will identify an everyday object as a toy and describe how it is used in daily life.

Lesson Plan
Tuning In
- Students watch and listen to the Toy Story –ย A Surprise Presentย videoย on YouTube. After watching, ask the students:
- Whatย isย this video about?
- Have you ever been given a surprise toy?
- What is a toy?
- As a class, brainstorm the features of a toy. Record the student’s ideas on the board.
Teacher Instruction
- Display and discuss slide 6 of the Toys – Past, Present and Future PowerPoint.ย Encourage the students to contribute other definitions for a toy.
- As a class, identify which of the everyday objects on slide 7 are toys. Encourage the students to justify their decisions as they sort the toys. Discuss the answers on slide 8.
Guided/Independent Learning
- Place the students into small groups. Provide each group with the Alien Grab – Toy Sorting Game. Explain to the students that they must work together as a group to sort and classify the cards, according to whether they are toys, food, cats or shoes. Monitor and support the students as required.
Wrapping Up
- As a class, use slide 6 as a checklist to ensure that all the toy cards from the sorting game have been given to the correct alien. Encourage the students to suggest other items from around the classroom that the toy alien could have grabbed.

- Encourage less confident students to participate in group work and class discussions at a level at which they feel comfortable.
