Full Day Plan
Mark the roll and record any absences on the Substitute Teaching Day Feedback Form. Identify any students with special educational needs and ensure you are aware of any assistance they may require throughout the day.
Rules and Routines
Establish rules and expectations for the day with the students. Familiarize yourself with the regular routines of the class, as well as any additional activities happening during the day e.g. assembly.
Literacy – Reading Comprehension
Distribute a copy of the Comprehension – Should Smart Phones Be Allowed in Classrooms? to the students. Read the text as a class. Monitor and support the students as they independently complete the comprehension questions. Once the students have finished, discuss the answers as a class.
Literacy – Writing Task
As a class, brainstorm additional arguments for and against taking smart phones to school. Using some of the arguments suggested by the class, ask the students to choose one side of the argument. Allow the students to independently write a letter to their principal, requesting for smart phones to be either banned or allowed in the classroom. Once they have finished, encourage volunteers to share their letters with the class.
Numeracy – Money and Financial Mathematics
Provide each student with a What’s It Worth? American Currency Game. Monitor and support the students as they complete the task. When the students have finished, correct the worksheets as a class.
Numeracy – Shape
As a whole class, revise the names of common 3D objects. Distribute a copy of the 3D Nets – Correct and Incorrect worksheets to the students. Monitor and support the students as they construct the nets and analyze why some nets work and some do not. Once the students have finished, discuss the nets and the students’ reasoning as a class.
Literacy – Independent or Shared Reading
Allow the students to independently read an appropriate book of their choice. Alternatively, choose a book to read and share with the students.
Health/P.E. – Physical Education
Choose one of the activities from the Pack of Fun- Quick Fitness Games. Create space inside the classroom, or go outside to the playground to play the game. If time permits, choose multiple games to play.
