The Groundhog Day holiday arrives just once a year (unless you're in a Bill Murray movie!), and that day is always February 2. The holiday is one of those that moves around the week, so in 2026 Groundhog Day will be a Monday. That means you will be able to celebrate with your students on the actual day!

What Is Groundhog Day and How Does It Work?

Not familiar with this quirky holiday? The Groundhog Day celebration was born in 1887 in Gobblers Knob, Pennsylvania. The traditional tale is that if the groundhog emerges from its hole and sees its shadow, it gets scared and scurries back into its burrow, predicting six more weeks of winter. However, early spring is in the forecast if the groundhog doesn't see his shadow.

It's certainly a unique holiday, but it also opens the door for countless curriculum-aligned ways to celebrate.

How to Celebrate Groundhog Day With Kids!
