Observe Environmental Impact With a Bread Mold Experiment

Bring microbiology and environmental science to life with this engaging, hands-on printable Bread Mold experiment pack! Students will explore how environmental conditions such as moisture and temperature, affect mold growth by investigating wet sliced bread placed in different locations over five days.

Designed for upper elementary school science classes, this Bread Mould Experiment combines environmental science, scientific observation, prediction, and scientific record-keeping.

A Hands-On Moldy Bread Experiment

This Moldy Bread Experiment pack includes everything you and your students need to conduct a hands-on controlled investigation. Students will:

  • Label four resealable bags: Sunny, Cool, Cold, and Control.
  • Place one slice of bread into each bag.
  • Lightly moisten each slice with the same amount of water.
  • Seal each bag tightly and place it in a sunny, cool, cold, or room temperature environment to store for 5 days
  • Each day, observe the bread without opening the bags.
  • Record their observations, noting any mold growth, color, or physical changes.
  • On Day 5, they will complete the final observations and record their results.

Complete teacher instructions, student recording pages, and data tables are included, along with prompts for summarizing findings and discussing results in groups.
