Explore Types of Dependent Clauses with a Sorting Game

If your students have a solid understanding of what dependent clauses are, they may be ready to explore the different types of dependent clauses and the role these play in complex sentences.

Dependent clauses add detail, depth and meaning to sentences, as well as performing specific functions. These include:

  • Reason – Tells why something happens.
  • Purpose – Tells what the goal is.
  • Condition – Shows what will happen if another thing happens.
  • Concession – Shows that something was unexpected.
  • Time – Tells when something happens.

This sorting activity includes 24 sentence cards that feature different dependent clauses. Students read each card carefully, decide whether the clause shows reason, purpose, condition, concession or time, and then place it under the correct header. A recording sheet and answer key are also provided in the download.

This sorting activity exploring types of dependent clauses downloads as a full-color PDF or editable Google Slides file.

Ideas for Teaching Dependent Clauses Types

This dependent clauses activity can be used in a variety of ways to engage and support your students. Here are some ideas from our teacher team:

  • Create a Display – Place the five sort headings on a bulletin board in the classroom. As a class, work together to sort the sentences and add them under the correct headings. This makes a great ongoing reference tool for students.
  • Write One More – After the students have sorted all the cards, have them write a one more example sentence for each category of dependent clause. This provides a valuable opportunity for students to demonstrate their learning.
  • Add Some Movement – Turn the activity into a movement break. Give each student either a sort heading or a sentence card, then have them walk around the room to make groups based on the cards they have been given.
