What’s Inside? Inference Activity for Early Readers

In this inferencing activity, students explore each image closely, identifying items and using them as clues to make thoughtful inferences about the person who might own the bin or backpack. This activity supports the development of critical thinking and comprehension skills by encouraging learners to justify their ideas with evidence from the images, helping them build confidence in explaining their reasoning.

Answer sheets are provided so students can self-check. 

Inference Activities in the Classroom

This resource can be used in a variety of ways to suit different classroom needs. 

  • Introduce the activity as a whole-class discussion by displaying an image and modelling how to identify clues and make inferences together. 
  • For small group work, students can collaborate to examine an image, record their ideas, and share their reasoning with the class. 
  • It can also be used as an independent task, where students analyse the images and complete the answer sheets to check their understanding. 
  • To extend learning, encourage students to create their own “mystery” bags or bins filled with items for classmates to infer from, or have them write a short description or story about the imagined owner. 
  • These flexible options make it easy to differentiate and support a range of learning styles while building confidence in inferencing skills.
