Lesson 8: The Impact of Federation on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples
A 60 minute lesson in which students will investigate the impact of Australian Federation on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples.

Lesson Plan
Tuning In
- Students watch and listen to the Connecting with Country and Each Otherย video on the ABC Splash website. At the end of the video, ask the students:
- Dean Kelly discusses his father’s Country and his mother’s Country. How does the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander People’s definition of ‘Country’ differ to the European definition?
- Kelly says his role is to work closely with the Aboriginal Australian community to get them back on Country. What does he mean by this?
- What kind of nation does Kelly hope Australia can become?
Teacher Instruction
- Display and discuss slides 23-25 of the Australia Federates PowerPoint. Discuss any new vocabulary that the students may encounter.
- Display slide 26. Discuss how the students would be impacted if they were removed from their own families. Facilitate a discussion on how the students think they might react, and the measures they would take, if they found themselves in a similar situation.
Guided/Independent Learning
- Display slide 27. Watch the 1967 Referendum video on the BTN website. Encourage the students to take notes as they are watching.
- Discuss the independent activity with the students. Facilitate a discussion around the types of persuasive language and imagery the students would employ to reflect the content and era of the poster. Record some of the students’ ideas on the board to refer to during the task.
- Monitor and support the students as they complete the task. Once the students have finished, allow more confident students to share their work with the class.
Wrapping Up
- Encourage the students to share the reasons why they would support the 1967 Referendumย if they had the opportunity to vote.ย Display the students’ work around the classroom.

- Encourage more capable students to write a short chant or speech to accompany the poster.
Supporting Students
- Allow less confident students to work with a partner to create their poster.
