Lesson 4: Australia Moves to Federate
A 60 minute lesson in which students will form a perspective on the benefits of Australian Federation.

Lesson Plan
Tuning In
- Students watch and listen to the Federation Explained video on the ABC Splash website.ย At the end of the video, ask the students:
- Why do you think the British established colonies instead of one nation?
- What would be the disadvantages of having six different countries sharing the one space?
- What were some of the concerns of the colonies when moving towards federating?
Teacher Instruction
- Display and discussย slides 5-7 of the Australia Federates PowerPoint. Ensure that the students understand the meaning of any unfamiliar vocabulary e.g. tariffs, nationalism, immigration.ย
- Display and discuss slide 8. Project the Support and Opposition for Federation Fact Sheets on the board and read through the information as a class. Encourage the students to share their opinions and feelings on Australian Federation.
Guided/Independent Learning
- Place the students into pairs. Provide each pair with a copy of the Federation Sorting Activity. Monitor and support the students as they complete the activity. Discuss the answers as a class.
- Display slide 9 and discuss the independent task. As a class, research who was the Premier of your colony (state) in 1900 so that the students can accurately address their letter.
- Monitor and support the students as they independently write their letters.
Wrapping Up
- Encourage confident students to read their finished letters aloud. Challenge the class to identify whether the student supports or opposes the idea of Federation.

- Encourage more capable students to create a tally and graph of the opinions of each student in the class.
Supporting Students
- Display the Writing a Persuasive Letter Poster in the classroom to assist students with lower literacy skills in writing their letters.
