## What Is an Algebraic Expression?

An algebraic expression is a maths problem that uses numbers, letters and symbols to show relationships between them. It’s like a puzzle that you have to solve by putting the pieces together.

For example, ‘2x + 3’ is an algebraic expression. The ‘2x’ means two times a number, which we don’t know yet, and the ‘+3’ means we add three to that number. So if we knew what ‘x’ was, we could solve the expression by multiplying it by two and then adding three to the result.

If you are looking for an interactive activity to help your students strengthen their understanding of writing, reading and solving algebraic expressions, you have come to the write place! This digital activity includes 8 challenging activities that require students to evaluate expressions, demonstrate an understanding of algebraic phrases, complete fact families and more!

## Tips for Differentiation + Scaffolding

A team of dedicated, experienced educators created this resource to support your maths lessons.

In addition to individual student work time, use this activity to enhance learning through guided maths groups, whole class lessons or remote learning assignments.

If you have a mixture of above and below-level learners, we have a few suggestions for keeping students on track with these concepts:

### 🆘 Support Struggling Students

If students need additional support, help them talk through what the operations represent and what words can be used to explain each. Complete the slides with a partner or one on one with the teacher.

### ➕ Challenge Fast Finishers

As an added challenge, ask students to create a ‘Which one doesn’t belong’ or ‘Find the imposter’ task. They will write 3 algebraic expressions that have the same solution and 1 with a different solution. Students mix up all 4 and trade with a classmate to take turns determining the ‘imposter’ or expression that does not belong.

### 🧑‍🏫 Group Learning

Project the slides onto a screen and work through them as a class by having students record their answers in their notebooks or mini whiteboards.

## Easily Prepare This Resource for Your Students

Use the dropdown icon on the Download button to choose between the PowerPoint or Google Slides versions of this resource. An answer key is also included.

Whether you are using this activity in Google Slides or Powerpoint, please be sure to open in Edit mode, not presentation mode. Students will drag and drop, extend lines and type to complete the activities.
