Get Your Hands on a Dividing Decimals Activity!

Are you looking for a resource to help your students improve their decimal division skills? Teach Starter has created a match-up activity that you can use with your students in your classroom. The problems included in this activity involve dividing decimals by a whole number as well as dividing decimals by another decimal. The problems range in complexity from divisors with single digits to those with three digits.

To play, cut out the cards and lay them in a working space. Each student or pair of students will need a recording sheet. Students must solve each decimal division problem and find its corresponding answer. Students can write their matches on their recording sheets.

This math matching game downloads as a full-colour printable PDF or editable Google Slides file. It includes:

  • Instructions
  • 36 matching cards
  • Recording sheet
  • Answer key

Alternate Game Ideas for This Decimals Resource

Looking for some fresh ideas for implementing this decimal notation resource in your classroom? Check out the suggestions below from our experienced teacher team:

  • Speed Matching Game – Want to set a challenge for your more-confident mathematicians? Set up a timer and challenge students to complete the division algorithms as quickly as possible. This adds an element of competition and excitement to the activity.
  • Relay Race – Divide students into two team lines and show a flashcard to the students at the front of each line. The student that produces a correct quotient first wins the flashcard. The team with the most flashcards at the end of the game wins!
  • Ordering Activity – Remove all the answer cards and have the students order the cards from least to greatest. As an alternative, have the students place these on number lines. This is a great activity to consolidate your students’ understanding of decimal place value.
