Use equal sharing activity mats to help Year 1 students develop early division skills by sharing coin collections fairly between groups.
Equal Sharing Activity Mats for Hands-On Maths Learning
Understanding equal sharing helps students build a foundation for division and multiplication. In Year 1, students learn that collections can be shared fairly so that each group receives the same amount.
These equal sharing activity mats provide a hands-on way for students to explore this concept using coins, counters or other manipulatives. Students choose a sharing mat, draw a matching task card, model the given number of coins and share them equally between the friends shown on the mat. They then determine how many coins each friend receives.
This reusable resource encourages mathematical discussion, strengthens problem-solving skills and helps students visualise equal groups in a meaningful way.
Engaging Ways to Use This Equal Sharing Resource
This equal sharing activity is easy to incorporate into your maths lessons and can be used in a variety of creative ways, including:
Money sharing challenge – Students use plastic coins to complete the sharing tasks and explain how they know the sharing is fair.
Mystery maths bags – Place task cards and counters into bags for students to select and solve at random.
Maths rotations – Add the activity mats to a small-group station for hands-on practise with equal groups and early division concepts.
The flexible format makes it easy to revisit equal sharing throughout the year.
