Explore Story Characters of Any Text

One of the first story elements we teach to our littlest learners is characters. Characters can be people, animals, magical creatures or personified objects.

This resource gives students the opportunity to practise identifying characters in stories. It prompts students to use text and pictures to draw and write about characters.

This worksheet can be used for any story the students have read. There is space on the worksheets for the students to record the title and author of the story they are referring to. There are subtle differences between the differentiated versions of this worksheet, as outlined below.

  • Worksheet 1 – Students focus on both the main character and additional characters. They are required to:
    • Write the name of the main character.
    • List three physical characteristics of the main character.
    • Draw each additional character.
    • Write the name of each additional character.
  • Worksheet 2 – Students focus on the main character. They are required to:
    • Draw the character.
    • Write the character’s name.
    • Write a quote from the character.
    • Write a sentence about one thing the character did.
