Factor Pairs Activity

What are factor pairs? Factor pairs are pairs of integers that, when multiplied together, equal a given number. For example, the factor pairs of the number 6 are (1, 6) and (2, 3) because 1 x 6 = 6 and 2 x 3 = 6.

Teach Starter has created a fun craftivity for your students to complete while learning how to determine the factor pairs of a given number. This download includes a set of teacher directions, a student handout with directions, 2 kite templates, 2 flower templates, leaf templates, a list of number options, and an answer key.

Students follow the directions on their handouts to complete this task. First, they choose a number from the options, or teachers can assign numbers to differentiate the task. Then, students work out the factors of their number. They will use the templates to build either a kite or a flower, showing their factor pairs. This would make a lovely classroom display when students are finished, as well.

This resource aims to practice determining factor pairs of numbers up to 100.

If you have a mixture of above and below-level learners, check out these suggestions for keeping students on track with the concepts: 

🆘 Support Struggling Students

Assign the numbers with fewer factors to your students needing more support. This lowers the complexity of the task while still targeting the same standard. Also, allow the use of a calculator and multiplication chart when applicable. Students could also work in pairs or small groups.

➕ Challenge Fast Finishers

For students needing a challenge, differentiate by assigning the more difficult numbers from the option list. Teachers can also choose numbers beyond 100 to make the activity more complex. Students can also create more than one craft or check completed crafts as an error analysis extension.
