Assess student understanding about the different statements that one might say to distinguish between having a growth or fixed mindset.
This worksheet is best used as independent practice as part of your exploration of developing a growth mindset.
Students read each statement and label it as either a growth mindset or fixed mindset.
Some examples include:
- I already know I can’t do it.
- I haven’t yet, but I can.
- This is way too hard for me.

If needed, support students by assigning peer pairs or small groups to work together to complete the assignment.
Challenge fast finishers to circle words in each statement that support their reasoning. Students can also rework the fixed mindset statements to turn them into growth mindset statements. What words are missing that might reframe their thinking about the challenges they face?
A Variety of Ways to Prepare This Resource
Because this resource includes an answer sheet, we recommend you print one copy of the entire file. Then, make photocopies of the blank worksheet for students to complete.
You can also turn this teaching resource into a sustainable activity! Print a few copies on cardstock and slip them into dry-erase sleeves. Students can record their answers with a dry-erase marker, then erase and reuse.
Additionally, project the worksheet onto a screen and work through it as a class by having students record their answers in their notebooks.
