Helpful tips for parents on how to support students to complete homework.
Are you finding that more and more parents are asking for guidance on how to manage homework? If one parent is feeling unsure, chances are several others are too. That’s why we’ve created a practical handout you can share with families to help support them with homework expectations. Simply send a copy home, or customise the content using the editable version before sharing it with your students’ families.
As teachers, we naturally want to help and problem-solve, and this resource makes it easy to offer parents a set of simple, effective strategies to make homework time more manageable. Encourage parents and carers to:
- establish a consistent homework routine while remaining flexible when needed
- minimise distractions
- use positive reinforcement, such as praise or a reward system
- provide a snack and drink before getting started
- allow time for physical activity before homework
- stay calm, relaxed, and positive
Please note that the tips included in this handout are intended as a guide. Every student has individual needs that should be considered. Homework should be both manageable and meaningful—and most importantly, a positive and purposeful experience.
