Giving Directions Worksheet Pack for Exploring Location and Position

Understanding location and position helps students describe where objects are, follow directions and navigate spaces using mathematical language. This giving directions worksheet pack supports Year 1 learners as they practise concepts such as left, right, forward, backward, over, under, beside and between.

Featuring engaging robot-themed activities, students roll and follow algorithms, navigate maps, complete coding challenges and create their own obstacle courses. Activities encourage the use of directional and positional vocabulary while building problem-solving and spatial reasoning skills.

The pack includes opportunities for students to:

  • Follow directional algorithms using dice rolls.
  • Draw movement pathways on map grids.
  • Program robots to reach different locations.
  • Practise directional vocabulary.
  • Use and apply positional language.
  • Write step-by-step movement instructions.

Following Directions Pack Ideas for Engaging Classroom Learning

This following directions pack can be used in a variety of creative ways to reinforce location and position concepts while keeping students engaged.

  • Robot Engineers Station – Students write and test algorithms to navigate robot maps.
  • Human Robot Challenge – Create a floor grid and have students physically follow directions.
  • STEM Connections – Link the worksheets to introductory coding and robotics lessons.
