Explore the Main Idea in Fiction with Age-Appropriate Texts

Understanding the main idea in fiction is a foundational reading skill that helps students move beyond simply decoding words to truly making meaning from a text. While this skill is often associated with nonfiction, it’s just as critical in fiction, where students must identify central themes, character motivations and key events that drive the story.

This set of main idea in fiction worksheets has been designed to help students identify the central message of a text and the details that support it. It includes three short stories, with each accompanied by targeted questions that guide them in pinpointing the main idea and supporting details.

The passages featured in this resource are:

  1. The Last Firefly
  2. The Weight of the Trophy
  3. No Signal

The reading level of each text is slightly different, allowing you to choose the text that best fits the needs of your class or of individual students.

This resource downloads as a black-and-white PDF or editable Google Slides file. Answers are also included in the download to make marking quick and easy.

Explore the Main Idea of Fiction Through Differentiated Practice

This resource contains three texts, with each being slightly longer and more detailed than the last. This naturally lends itself to the gradual release of responsibility model of instruction, which means students are initially supported, then support is gradually withdrawn as their confidence increases.

Here’s how you can apply this model while using this resource:

  • Modelled Instruction (Whole Class) – Use the first text as a shared reading activity. Think aloud as you read, explicitly demonstrating how to identify the main idea and connect it to key story events. Highlight signal clues to help students see the thinking process in action.
  • Guided Group Practice – Work through the second passage in small groups. Encourage discussion and collaborative reasoning as students work together to determine the main idea and justify their answers. This is a great opportunity to support those students who are unsure or need prompting.
  • Independent Application – Assign the third text for independent practice or assessment. Students apply what they’ve learned, demonstrating their ability to identify the main idea and supporting details independently. This is perfect for checking understanding or gathering formative assessment data.
