Encouraging Art With Dot Day Activities

Are you on the hunt for something new and different to use in class on International Dot Day this year? If so, you’re in the right place! The Teach Starter Team has assembled a collection of fun Dot Day activities, starting with a printable Dot Day Art Journal cover.

This printable Dot Day handout is designed to encourage your students to think creatively and express themselves through art regularly. Students will create a custom Dot Day journal cover using the one-page template included to adorn a composition book dedicated solely to their fantastic artwork.

This resource is a fantastic way to get your students excited about thinking creatively and a fun way to capture all those fun ideas floating around in their little heads. Get them thinking about how they could turn a dot into art and inspire them to start creating!

Using Your Printable Dot Day Art Template

  1. Print each student a copy of the colour or black-and-white journal cover template. See printing tips below.
  2. Instruct students to design their journal cover by turning each “dot” into something new, for example, a basketball, doughnut, or even a pizza.
  3. Have them do their drawings first, then colour their journal cover using crayons or coloured pencils, including the background. Once students are finished, glue the journal cover onto the front of their sketchbook or notebook to add a fun, personalised twist to their art journal.

    Printing Tips and Tricks!

    • For spiral-bound notebooks, print the templates at 95% scale to ensure the cover will fit.
    • For composition notebooks, print the templates at 87% scale to ensure fit.
    • For binder inserts, no changes are needed to printing size.
    • If you prefer, use packing tape to adhere the cover to your journal.
