Multiplication or Division Sorting Cards for Building Multiplicative Thinking

Developing strong multiplicative thinking requires more than simply learning multiplication and division facts. Students must also learn how to identify which operation is needed to solve different types of word problems. Understanding the difference between multiplication and division situations helps students become more confident and successful problem solvers.

These multiplication or division sorting cards have been designed to help students distinguish between multiplication and division contexts. Students read a variety of word problems and sort them according to the operation needed to solve them. Along the way, they explore concepts such as equal groups, sharing, grouping and multiplicative comparison.

This resource includes:

Once students complete this activity, they will be better equipped to tackle a wide range of multiplication and division word problems with confidence.

Multiplication and Division Word Problems in the Classroom

These multiplication and division word problems can be used in a variety of engaging ways, including:

• Maths Detective Challenge: Students search for clues within each problem to determine whether multiplication or division is needed. Encourage students to explain how they made their decision.
• Operation Sort Relay: Place the cards around the room and have students move between stations sorting each problem.Extend the activity by having students solve selected questions.
• Problem Creator Challenge: Students write their own multiplication and division word problems after completing the sort. Have classmates sort and solve the newly created problems.

Because the activity focuses on reasoning and discussion, it works well across a range of ability levels.
