Ordinals Worksheet Activities That Build Early Maths Confidence

Understanding ordinal numbers is an important part of early number sense, helping students describe position and order in everyday situations. In a Foundation classroom, this might look like talking about who is first in line, which activity comes next, or the order of events in the day. However, in order for this language to really stick, explicit practise is required.

This ordinals worksheet pack has been designed by the Teach Starter team to support your students in identifying and using ordinal numbers. It includes four non-prep, black‑and‑white worksheets and is available as a print‑ready PDF and editable file for easy differentiation.

The activities included in this ordinals worksheet pack are:

  • Reading ordinal numbers and colouring the matching object
  • Cut‑and‑paste tasks based on position
  • Naming the position of an object using ordinal language

Answers are also included in your download to make marking quick and easy.

Once students engage with these resources, they will be able to identify, read and describe ordinal positions within a sequence using correct mathematical language.

Flexible Classroom Uses for This Ordinal Numbers Worksheet Pack

This ordinal numbers worksheet pack is designed to slot easily into your existing maths block and can be used in a variety of teaching contexts, including:

  • Whole-class modelling – Project one of the worksheets onto your interactive whiteboard and complete as a class as a lesson warm-up.
  • Small-group rotations – Place copies of the worksheets at maths stations and have students work collaboratively to complete the activities.
  • Independent practice – Once you have taught ordinal numbers to students, have them complete one or more of the worksheets independently.

Because the activities are scaffolded and visually clear, they work well across a range of abilities.
