Increase the ‘Chance’ of Learning With Our Probability Games!

Engage your students with Roll and Remove, one of our hands-on probability games that combines strategy, critical thinking, and a lot of fun! Perfect for introducing or reinforcing concepts of probability, this easy-to-implement activity uses simple materials—two dice and 12 markers per student—to spark meaningful mathematical discussions.

Students will quickly become invested as they make choices, test strategies and refine their thinking through repeated play. With every roll, they’ll gain a deeper understanding of probability distribution and number patterns. Our probability games are ideal for individual or small group play, and Roll and Remove is no different. It is a low-prep, high-impact resource that turns maths class into a dynamic learning experience.

Included in this probability activity:

  • Game Mat
  • Reflection Worksheet
  • Instructions

Prepare and Play This Probability Activity

Like many of our probability games, this activity is low on prep and high on fun. Here’s how to get your students learning!

Prepare

  1. Gather a supply of linking cubes (or other markers) and two dice.
  2. Give each student a copy of the game mat.
  3. Provide each student with 12 linking cubes or other markers.

Play

  1. Tell students that you will be playing a game. Without giving them any additional information, instruct them to place the 12 linking cubes on their game mats under the numbers of their choosing. They can place all cubes under one number, or spread them out – it’s up to them!
  2. Roll the dice and announce the total. If students have a cube under that number, they may remove it.
  3. Tell students that you will continue to roll and they will continue to remove cubes if they are able. The first student to remove all the cubes will be the winner.
  4. Continue in this manner until one of the students wins by clearing their board.
  5. Have a short class discussion about the results. If they were to play this game again, how might they place their cubes? Why?
  6. Play the game several more times, each time giving students a chance to refine their strategy. Then ask students to answer the included reflection questions and discuss the results.
