Choose appropriate metric units when measuring the length, mass and capacity of objects; use smaller units or a combination of units to obtain a more accurate measure <ul> <li>ordering metric units from the largest unit to the smallest, for example, kilometre, metre, centimetre, millimetre</li> <li>recognising that some units of measurement are better suited to some tasks than others; for example, kilometres are more appropriate than metres to measure the distance between 2 towns</li> <li>deciding on the unit required to estimate the amount of paint or carpet for a room or a whole building, and justifying the choice of unit in relation to the context and the degree of accuracy required</li> <li>measuring and comparing distances (for example, measuring and comparing jumps or throws using a metre length of string and then measuring the part metre with centimetres and/or millimetres) and explaining which unit of measure is most accurate</li> <li>researching how the base units are derived for the International System of Units (SI), commonly known as the metric system of units, recognising that the metric unit names for the attributes of length and mass are international standards for measurement</li> </ul>

Convert between common metric units of length, mass and capacity; choose and use decimal representations of metric measurements relevant to the context of a problem <ul> <li>recognising the significance of the prefixes in units of measurement</li> <li>identifying and using the correct operations when converting between units including millimetres, centimetres, metres, kilometres, milligrams, grams, kilograms, tonnes, millilitres, litres, kilolitres and megalitres</li> <li>recognising the equivalence of measurements, such as 1.25 metres is the same as 125 centimetres</li> </ul>

📏 Measurement Conversion Worksheets

Are you looking for a fun way for your students to practise measurement conversion? Teach Starter has created a resource that you can use with your students that focuses on converting different metric units of length. Sample problems include those such as:

  • 56 km = _____ cm
  • ______ cm = 3 m
  • 5 m = _______ cm

This resource includes three riddle worksheets for students to practise converting metric units of length. On each worksheet, students must solve 12 conversion problems using multiplication and division skills. Once students have completed the problems, they must use the letters in each box to complete the answer to the riddle at the bottom of the page.

An answer key is included with your download to make grading fast and easy!

Extend and Support Student Learning

Encourage students who finish quickly to convert each question to a different unit within the same measurement system. For example, if students have already converted km to cm, they can try to convert the answer to millimetres.

If there are students who need some support, allow them access to a multiplication chart. Additionally, students can reference previous assignments, posters, or anchor charts to help guide them through the process of converting measurement units.

🖨️ Easily Download & Print

Use the dropdown icon on the Download button to choose between the PDF or editable Google Slides version of this resource.

Because this resource includes an answer sheet, we recommend you print one copy of the entire file. Then, make photocopies of the blank worksheet for students to complete.
